The band was once a punk act that soon began adding thrash parts and metal influences. In later times, they incorporated funk elements into their music. The band has gone on hiatus three times: in the mid-'80s, mid-'90s, and the early 2000s.
Suicidal Tendencies are considered by many to be "the fathers of crossover thrash". They are also considered by many to be one of the most important funk metal bands to exist in the late '80s/early '90s along with Primus, Faith No More, Fishbone (former guitarist Rocky George would join them), 24-7 Spyz, Living Colour, and many others. Former bassist Robert Trujillo is considered responsible for adding funk elements into their music (this also resulted in Infectious Grooves forming).
Due to an incident at their 1984 performance at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, California (where their audience tore out the first 10 rows, which made it impossible for promoters to obtain crowd insurance), Suicidal Tendencies had not been allowed to play any shows in Southern California again (specifically in Los Angeles) until 1991 when the ban was lifted. Since then, the band has continued to play shows in Southern California.
