It is both made-up and real because the band members are American actors posing as British musicians, yet they have performed concerts and released records under the name Spinal Tap (stylized with a dotless i and an n-diaeresis, parodying the heavy metal umlaut). The band has also given a number of in-character interviews over the years. A spinal tap or lumbar puncture is a medical procedure in which a needle is inserted into the spinal canal, usually to collect cerebrospinal fluid for diagnostic purposes. The fictional band were called The Thamesmen from 1964-1966.
